Build a Car With Your Kid · Chapter 11
Stage D: the round trip, then the first drive
The video
The video of the round trip and the first drive isn’t filmed yet. It’s on its way, and it will go on this page: the QR in your book stays the same.
Until then: the round trip, steps D1 to D5, is on the Stage D test page, with what you should see at each step and the fix for each thing you might see instead.
The first drive, steps D6 to D8, is below, as Chapter 11 prints it.
The first drive
Now the car goes on the floor. Find a clear space, away from stairs and from anything that could fall.
Send S, then unplug the USB cable. The holder stays switched on.
Lift the car off its box and put it on the floor.
Drive. Try speed 1 and speed 9, the horn, and a spin each way.
Talk about it
"It drifts a little to one side on the floor. Is something wired wrong?"
Listen for: "probably not". No two motors are exactly the same, so one side runs a bit faster. If it spins on the spot when you press F, that's different, and the wheels test in Stage B would have caught it.
The first time it moves is the point of the whole book. Take a video. If you share it online, keep your child's face out of it: hands and the car are enough.
When you've finished, switch the holder off. The parent takes the cells out if the car won't be used again for a few days.
You can put a new sketch on the board any time, with the Bluetooth module still connected. Part 4 shows how.
That's Part 1 finished: a car built and driven. Stuck for 10 minutes on the way? Run the loop from Chapter 3, then go to Chapter 12 or the Stage D test page: troniction.com/go/car-test-d.
